KAYAKOY (GHOST VILLAGE)

Another photo taken at the ghost village of Kakakoy, in between Fethiye and Olu Deniz in South Western Turkey.

The village - which contains over 2,000 hillside houses and 3 churches - was originally an old greek settlement founded in the 14th Century and protected under the Ottoman rule. However, in 1923 a poplation exchange was agreed between the Turkish & Greek goverments, in which Greeks living in Turkey would be re-settled in Greece, and Turks living in Greece would go the other way. Kayakoy was then abandoned by the Greeks, and for some reason the returning Turks decided not to settle here (despite its fantastic setting in the fertile Kaya Valley), leaving the village deserted. Since then a large earthquake destroyed many of the buildings, and most of the wooden doors and window frames have been taken for use in other homes, adding to the "ghost town" feel.
