Highlights
Tlos Rock Tombs, Saklıkent Ring Rafting, Gömbe Uçarsu Waterfall
A Mediterranean holiday is about more than just beaches. Behind Kaş and Kalkan, the mighty Toros Mountains conceal icy rivers, ancient cities, and highland plateaus that offer a completely different adventure. Here is the region's most popular day-trip and jeep safari route.
The Winged Horse's Home: Tlos & Saklıkent Gorge
Begin at Tlos, one of Lycia's oldest settlements, in mythology, home to the winged horse Pegasus and the hero Bellerophon. The acropolis rock tombs and colossal theatre overlook the fertile Xanthos Valley below. Just beyond Tlos lies Saklıkent Gorge, Turkey's longest and deepest canyon. Wading through the icy mountain waters between towering 300-metre rock walls is pure adrenaline. At the canyon exit, ring rafting (inner tube rafting) on the river caps off the adventure.
Toros Mountain Cool: Gömbe Plateau & Green Lake
Continue climbing into the mountains and the Mediterranean scrub gives way to pine and cedar forests. Gömbe Plateau, famous for its apple and walnut orchards, is the beating heart of traditional yayla (highland) culture. Just above Gömbe, nestled in the Akdağ massif, lies Green Lake (Yeşil Göl), a crater-like natural wonder of glacial origin with startling green waters. Nearby, Uçarsu Waterfall cascades from the mountain; even in mid-summer, you may need a jacket.
