Sitting in Kaş square, sipping your coffee, the mountainous island right across the water is Greece's easternmost territory, Meis Island (Kastellorizo). Just a 20-minute ferry ride transports you to a completely different country: neoclassical houses in pastel colours cascading down an amphitheatre-shaped harbour, and an entirely different rhythm of life.
What to Do on Meis: The Blue Cave
The moment you step off the ferry, charming Greek tavernas line the harbour. Car traffic on the island is virtually non-existent, everywhere is walkable. Your first priority: negotiate a small motorboat from the harbour to the Blue Cave (Blue Grotto). The cave entrance is so narrow you enter lying flat on your back in the boat. Inside, phosphorescent blue light creates a magical spectacle. Swimming here is one of the most extraordinary experiences you will ever have.
Tavernas, Castle & Shopping
After the sea adventure, climb up to the Castle of the Knights of St. Johnfor a panoramic view of Kaş from the opposite shore. Before your afternoon ferry, enjoy grilled octopus, horiatiki (Greek salad), and local ouzo at the harbour tavernas, soaking in the island's peaceful “siga siga” (slowly, slowly) lifestyle.
