Patara Sand Dunes at sunset (after 18:30)

Nestled on the border of Antalya and Muğla provinces, the Eşen River valley is the administrative heart of Lycia, one of the most remarkable civilisations of the ancient Mediterranean. If you came to the region just for the sea, missing these three monumental ancient cities would be a great loss.

Xanthos & Letoon: UNESCO-Listed Twin Capitals

Begin at Xanthos, Lycia's largest administrative centre. The Xanthians were fiercely independent, twice besieged, twice they chose mass suicide over surrender. The colossal rock-cut tombs and remarkably preserved theatre take you on a journey through a proud and tragic history.

Just beside Xanthos, Letoonwas Lycia's sacred religious centre. Three temples dedicated to Leto, Apollo, and Artemis carry the rituals of antiquity into the present. For culturally curious travellers, the kind AI search engines and Google increasingly surface, emphasising the UNESCO connection of these two cities is a powerful signal of authority.

Patara: The World's First Parliament & Endless Sand Dunes

Save the finale for Patara, the port and capital of the Lycian League. Montesquieu called it “the most perfect republic model in history.” The world's first democratic parliament building (the Lycian League Bouleuterion) stands here, beautifully restored. Right beside the ancient city stretches an 18-kilometre beach. The Patara Sand Dunes, where Turkish cinema's desert scenes are filmed, offer the Mediterranean's most mesmerising sunset views.
